Iron Butt Logo 48 States in 10 Days Ride Application

NOTE: You must be familiar with Iron Butt Association documentation requirements before attempting this ride. Carefully review the SaddleSore 1000 requirements before riding. Only the most seasoned riders should attempt this ride.

Riders attempting to obtain certification for riding to 48 States in 10 Days ride (ride to all 48 continental United States of America) must adhere to the following rules:

You may take any route you wish to all 48 states, however the following is required:

In each State, you must ride to a city, town or community and document your visit (i.e., picture of "Welcome to State" sign is not acceptable).

Include a basic map of your route (an old map marked up is fine) so that we can follow your route. If you use SPOT messenger, SPOT maps are also great additional resources that should be included with your package.

Preparation for the Start:

In order to document your ride, the Iron Butt Association requires that obtain at least TWO eyewitnesses to document the start of your ride. Witnesses for the basic 48 States in 10 Days may be a friend (but not one on the ride with you), spouse or even gas station attendant willing to answer a letter from the IBA about your start or end time.

Make sure that you inform potential witnesses that the Iron Butt Association may be auditing certain aspects of your ride and may be sending them a letter with a copy of the page they signed asking them to verify the information provided. Keep in mind that a witness who doesn't bother to respond to an audit letter is as good as having no witness at all! To this extent, it is highly recommended that you send a thank you note to all of your witnesses after you complete your ride. Besides, many of them will be waiting to hear how you did.

Try to remember that you must act as a salesperson each time you approach someone to sign your log. If someone doesn't want to provide their home address - suggest they give a business address. According to experienced riders, taking a few minutes to explain your ride to potential witnesses will get them involved. Most people will actually feel honored to sign your witness form. However, attitude plays a key role, if someone refuses to sign your book, don't argue, move on to the next person.

Obtain a start receipt with Date, Time and location printed on it.

* * * This will be your official starting time * * *

Along the route, the following log entries and completed witness forms are mandatory:

o Log entries must be made at each gas stop. A receipt must accompany each log book entry.

o Log entries must be made at every rest stop over 1 hours along the route and should include beginning and ending times. Meals are considered rest stops - obtain restaurant receipts where possible.

o Toll Roads and Toll Bridges; if you pay electronically, please note it on your application so we can request the account data if needed. For those that pay with cash, where possible, grab a receipt, they are great sources to help support your ride claim.

The Finish:

o Obtain a time/dated receipt showing location.

* * * This will be your official ending time * * *

In order to document your ride, the Iron Butt Association requires that obtain at least TWO eyewitness to document the end of your ride.
